About Himawari Circuit

Himawari Circuit times and records your laps at the track with GPS (iOS and Android). Every time you cross a timing line the lap is recorded, along with sector times, top speed and G-force.

What it does
  • Automatic lap timing with GPS (it detects when you cross the timing line)
  • Sector times, up to three sectors
  • G-force from the accelerometer (lateral and longitudinal)
  • Your driving line on the map, and session replay
  • Compare driving lines — yours and other drivers' — with a speed chart
  • External GPS receivers such as RaceBox and DigSpice IV
  • Leaderboards by track, and live timing to share and watch
  • Sharing sessions and chatting in groups
  • Vehicle, tire and maintenance records
  • Your own tracks, for anything not already in the list

1
Agree to the notice (first launch only) The first time you open the app, a notice appears. Read the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy, tick “I agree to the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy”, then tap “Start using the app” to go to the home screen. When the terms are revised, this screen appears again with the date of the revision.
2
Create an account (optional) You can record sessions without an account. Signing in adds cloud sync for your sessions and the group features.
3
Add a vehicle (optional) Add the vehicle you drive from the vehicle list on the Account screen, and your sessions are recorded against it. A session has to have a vehicle to be listed on a track's leaderboard.
4
Go on track On the home screen, pick a track (and a vehicle if you want one), then tap “On track” in the middle of the tab bar. If you tap it without picking a track, the app tells you to pick one first. A note about timing accuracy appears next; read it and tap “Got it” (tick “Don't show this again” to skip it from then on).
5
Cross the timing line Going on track brings up the waiting screen. It shows the track name and its map, your vehicle and your personal best, along with the on-track message you set and which line you need to cross. Start driving, and timing begins the moment you cross the timing line — the screen switches to the lap timer.
6
Finish the session Tap the back button at the top left of the lap timer to finish. The session is saved, and uploaded automatically if you are signed in.
Worth knowing: the minimum lap time depends on the kind of track. It is 30 seconds for circuits and 3 seconds for segments. Crossing the line faster than that is ignored, so that noise is not counted as a lap.
Age check: the English Terms of Use are for users aged 18 and over, so the first screen also asks for your date of birth (month and year). On a recent iPhone we ask the operating system for your age range first, and skip the question if it answers that you are 18 or over. Answering under 18 locks the app on that device.
How we use your location: right after you accept the terms, we show what we record and what we use it for, and ask for your consent — before the operating system asks for permission. You can still open the app without consenting; we ask again when you start a session. You can read it back, and withdraw your consent, under Settings > About > “How we use your location”.

The screens (tab bar)

The five tabs at the bottom of the app take you to each screen. The home screen (dashboard) shows the track and vehicle you have selected; tap either to change it. Below that, “Best laps by track” lists your personal best for each track. Both headings collapse when you tap them.

The lap timer

While you are driving, the lap timer is on screen.

The lap timer
The lap timer — current lap, best lap and sector times
What it shows
  • The current lap number and elapsed time, in large type
  • Your best lap and which lap it was
  • Sector times, up to three sectors
  • A “BEST LAP” flash when you beat your best
  • The laps you have already done (scroll to see them)
Finishing a session

Tap the back button at the top left to finish. The session is saved on the phone, and uploaded automatically if you are signed in.

When GPS drops out

If positioning stops, the screen says so. The app restarts positioning on its own, and the message disappears once it comes back. If it stays, check your location permission and, if you use one, the connection to your external GPS receiver.

How laps are detected: a lap is recorded when your GPS track crosses the line between the two points of the timing line. Which line that is depends on the kind of track: circuits use the control line, while segments alternate between the start line and the finish line. If no line coordinates are set, the app instead detects you coming within 25 m of the center of the track. While you are stopped (under 3.6 km/h) a crossing is not counted, so waiting to set off on or next to the line will not start a session on positioning noise alone.

The list

Session debrief Lap Pro or above

The debrief card
The debrief — the run you just finished appears at the top of the list

When you finish a run, it appears at the top of the list as a card to fill in. Mood and track conditions are one tap each, the note takes up to 400 characters, and you can keep one photo. All of it is optional; you can skip it.

You can fill it in or change it later. For a run you have already written up, tap the debrief on its row; for one you have not, swipe left and choose Debrief. Replacing or removing the photo works from the same place.

Only you can see your debrief. Even if the session itself is public, other drivers never see it. Turning off “Session debrief” in the settings stops the card appearing after a run, but anything you have already written is kept, and on Lap Pro or Premium you can still write one from the list at any time.
Writing one needs Lap Pro or Premium. On Free or Drivers Club the card does not appear after a run, and choosing Debrief from the swipe takes you to the plan screen. Debriefs you have already written are kept when your plan changes. They stay on the row, and tapping one shows the note in full — you just cannot edit it.

Filtering

The tabs at the top of the list filter it. Which tabs you get depends on where you opened the list from.

Exporting your data Lap Pro or above

Note: CSV export needs Lap Pro or Premium. On Free or Drivers Club you are taken to the plan screen.

Sessions that have not been uploaded

Runs recorded out of signal, or while you were signed out, stay on the phone and still appear in the list. They upload by themselves once you are signed in and back online.

How many can stay on the phone: 100 on Free, 10,000 on Lap Pro, and no limit on Premium. Going over the limit never stops a session being recorded — what you drove at the track is not going to be lost for that. When you reach it, the app suggests uploading or deleting some.

Comparing driving lines, yours and other drivers'

Lay several laps over each other on the map, each in its own color, and see where the lines differ. Lines are drawn green, red, blue and yellow in order of lap time, and you can compare up to four at once. There are two ways in, and they differ in how you pick the laps.

  • From the session list “Line comparison” appears under a list that is limited to one track — after you pick a track under “By track”, or when you open the list from the track map or from a group. Tick it and you can select laps from the list; when you are done, tap “Compare”. It does not appear on the “All” tab, where tracks are mixed together. You need to be signed in.
  • From a session's details Tap “Line comparison” and a sheet slides up for choosing what to compare against.

The sheet opened from a session has three tabs for choosing laps.

  • This session — the other laps of the run you are looking at
  • Best by driver — each driver's best lap at this track (up to 100 drivers)
  • Search — laps at the same track, narrowed down. Filter by period (all, 1 month, 3 months, 1 year) and by how far the lap is from your own best (±1 s, ±3 s, ±5 s, ±10 s). Only the quickest matching lap from each driver is offered.

There is deliberately no “all” for the time difference: without it, there are far too many laps to choose from. Including even one lap from another driver needs Premium (see “Comparing with your friends” below).

Session replay

Replay the laps you picked on the line comparison screen. Drag the playhead to look at what the car was doing at a particular corner.

  • Change what the map does The buttons to the right of the map keep the leading car centered, turn the map so the leading car points up, tilt the map, and zoom in and out.
  • Move the map with your fingers One finger moves the map, even during playback. With two fingers, pinch to zoom, twist to rotate, and move both up or down to tilt.
  • Tap to pause Tapping the map during playback pauses it. The play button in the middle of the map starts it again.
Charts
  • The lap time chart and the speed chart on a session's details (all plans)
  • The time gap chart and the speed chart in line comparison (Lap Pro or above). Both are plotted against distance, so you can see exactly where on the track the gap opened up

The gap to your best lap is always shown in the lap list (all plans).

Comparing with your friends Premium

Lay the driving line of someone in your group over your own. This needs both the analysis features and the group features, so it is available on Premium only.

External GPS receivers

You can record with an external GPS receiver such as RaceBox or DigSpice IV over Bluetooth. Add one from “External GPS receivers” in the settings.

Looking for an external GPS receiver
Tap “+ Add” and the app looks for receivers nearby
A registered external GPS receiver
Receivers you have added are listed under “External GPS receivers” in the settings
We recommend an external GPS receiver for comparing driving lines. A phone's built-in GPS updates only about once per second, which is not accurate enough to compare lines. An external receiver updates about 25 times per second, enough to tell apart how two drivers turned into the same corner. For lap times alone, the built-in GPS is fine.
Connecting one
  • Turn the receiver on
  • Settings → External GPS receivers → tap “+ Add”
  • Pick your receiver from the ones it finds
  • From then on it connects by itself when you start a session

Tracks

Find tracks from the “Track map” tab. The list has three tabs.

Live timing — the drivers who are out now
Marking a favorite

Tap the bookmark at the left of a row to add or remove a favorite. Favorites are collected under “My tracks & favorites”. The bookmark on a track you created is gold, and tapping it opens the editor.

Creating a track
  • Tap “+ Add” at the top right of the track list (you need to be signed in)
  • Enter the name (required), a description, the kind of track (circuit or segment) and the area
  • Place the track on the map. You can search by address
  • The track outline is taken from the surrounding map data. Tap any line you do not want to remove it
  • Draw the timing lines on the map (make them a little longer than the track is wide — see the note below)

Which lines you can draw depends on the kind of track. A circuit has a control line, sector 1 and sector 2; a segment has a start line, a finish line, sector 1 and sector 2. Sectors are optional.

Draw the lines a little long: a crossing is judged against the line extended by 2 m at each end, but GPS positioning drifts by a few meters. A line drawn exactly the width of the track can be missed — when you run wide, or when positioning swings outwards — and the lap is lost. Leave some room at both ends. Be careful with the control line, though: it usually runs alongside the pit lane, and a line drawn too long picks up cars in the pits and ruins the lap.
Placing a timing line when creating a track

What you can open from a track
  • Leaderboard — times in order, for that track. Every plan can look at it (you need to be signed in)
  • Live timing — watch the laps of drivers who are out right now Drivers Club or above
  • Sessions — runs that other drivers have made public Drivers Club or above

The leaderboard filters by period (all, today, this month, this year — it opens on “this month”) and by category (cars or bikes — it opens on cars). Cars and bikes are never mixed in one table, so one of the two is always selected. The same filters are on a group's leaderboard.

How live timing starts: there is no button to start broadcasting. If you are on Drivers Club or above and your live timing visibility is anything other than private, each lap is shared automatically as it is recorded. With “Groups” it goes only to members of your groups; with “All drivers” it also appears on the track's live timing (see Account). Sessions on tracks you created are never broadcast, though: tracks you create are visible only to you, and we do not want a run to appear live and give the track's name away.
About tracks you create: only you can see them. Neither the name nor your runs on it appear to other drivers — not in live timing, not on a group leaderboard, not in the track picker. If you would like a track added as an official one that everyone can share, request it from “Support” on the Account screen — there are links at the end of the track list and under the name field when you create a track. You can create 1 on Free, 100 on Lap Pro, and any number on Premium. To delete one, swipe its row left and tap Delete.

Groups Drivers Club or above

Create a group and share sessions with its members. You need to be signed in.

Group chat
Creating a group
  • Open the “Groups” tab
  • Tap “+ Add” at the top right
  • Enter a name and a description, choose public or private, and create it

A public group is listed under “by public group” in a track's sessions, so drivers outside the group can see the runs too. You can add photos to a group; the first one becomes its icon.

Inviting members
  • Open the “Members” tab of the group and tap “Add member” at the top right (owners only)
  • Scan the “My QR code” on the other person's Account screen to add them
  • A group holds up to 100 people, including the owner
What a group gives you

A group has two tabs: “Members” and “Chat”.

  • Group chat. Each message shows how many members have read it
  • A divider marks where you left off, and the tab gets a dot when there is something unread
  • Press and hold a message to copy its text
  • Reading the members' sessions
  • A group leaderboard for each track
  • Sharing and watching lap times live while people are driving
Leaving or deleting a group

Swipe a group left in the list. Owners get “Delete”, everyone else gets “Leave”.

How many you can create: 30 on Drivers Club, and any number on Premium. There is no limit on how many groups you can belong to.

Reporting and blocking

If a message or a group bothers you, you can report it or block the person. You need to be signed in.

The press-and-hold menu on a message
Press and hold a message for the report and block menu
Reporting
  • A message — press and hold it in the group chat and choose “Report this message”
  • A group — use the menu at the top right of the group (three dots) and choose “Report this group” (its name, description and photos)

Pick a reason: spam or advertising, abuse or harassment, inappropriate content, times that did not happen, or other. We read what you send and act on it. The report menu does not appear on your own messages or on groups you created.

Blocking

Press and hold a message in the group chat and choose “Block (name)”. Blocking works both ways — they cannot see you either.

  • Neither of you sees the other's messages in a group
  • You are not counted in their read count, and their messages do not mark your chat unread
  • They do not appear in the session lists by track or group, nor when you choose someone to compare lines with
  • Their bio and profile photo are hidden in the member list

Leaderboards and the member list itself (names, roles, join dates) are not affected. Removing one person from a leaderboard would move you up the order for yourself only, which would be misleading.

Unblocking

“Blocked drivers” on the Account screen lists everyone you have blocked. Swipe left and tap “Unblock”.

Messages we removed: a message removed after a report is shown in gray as having been deleted.

Vehicles

Add the vehicle you drive and your sessions are recorded against it. Even the free plan takes one vehicle.

Reorder the list to move one back to the top and it can be driven again.

The icon in the header of the machine detail opens its History: everything that happened to that machine, oldest first. Sessions, tires and maintenance records are laid out along a timeline, with a thumbnail wherever there is a photo. Tap a thumbnail to see it full size.

Turn the phone sideways and the timeline runs left to right, with sessions above the line and tires and maintenance below it.

From the header of the History you can play a recap movie. It runs the timeline from the oldest entry, with your best lap at each track drawn behind it. Sound starts off; a button turns it on. Drag the progress bar to move to any point.

The movie is not exported as a file. It is there to watch inside the app; there is no save or share.

Settings

The settings are at the bottom of the Account screen, in this order.

At the top

What the language changes: the text inside the app, and the user guide, Terms of Use and Privacy Policy you open from it. Dialogs from the operating system, such as the one asking for location permission, stay in your device's language — change those under the per-app language setting on your device. Anything other than Japanese puts you on the English Terms of Use, which are for users aged 18 and over.
What it says: a lap is read as “Lap 3, one twenty-three point four five”, giving the lap number and the time. The hundredths are read digit by digit so they are easy to catch. A sector sounds like “Sector 1, forty-five point six eight”.
If the announcement is lost under the car stereo: over Bluetooth, the announcement comes out of the car stereo too. Synthesised speech sounds quieter than music, so a level that suits your music can bury it. Turn up “Announcement volume” if that happens. The ▶ preview plays exactly as it does while you drive, so you can set the level with the car connected. “Announce sectors” and “Announcement volume” cannot be changed while lap announcements are off.
If you want music while you drive: with lap announcements on, the app silences music from other apps during a session so the announcement is not lost under it. If you would rather have your music, turn announcements off — then the music keeps playing. Settings cannot be changed mid-session (leaving the lap timer ends the run), so decide before you start.

External GPS receivers

Add and remove RaceBox, DigSpice IV and the like (see External GPS receivers).

Security

“Open iOS app settings” or “Open Android app settings” takes you to the operating system's own settings, where you can change permissions such as location.

About

At the bottom

What resetting changes: theme, accent color, vibration, lap announcements, the on-track message, how the wallpaper looks, and the note about timing accuracy all go back to their defaults. Favorite tracks, the wallpaper image itself, registered external GPS receivers, your sessions and your sign-in are untouched.
How announcements reach you: our announcements appear as a full-screen dialog when you open the app or come back to it. Tick “Don't show this again” before closing and that one never appears again. Some also arrive as a push notification; tapping it opens that announcement directly (and it counts as read, so it will not appear again). Either way you can read them again at any time under Settings > About > Announcements. You can turn the notifications off in your operating system's app settings; the in-app announcements appear regardless.
About the map: the map is always the aerial photo. Driving lines and timing lines only make sense against the surface itself, so there is no setting to switch it.
About music while driving: during a session the app holds the audio output, which stops the car's controls starting music unexpectedly. When a lap is recorded, the time is shown on the car's display.

Free trial: Premium has a free trial. It is shown on the plan screen only if you are eligible — anyone who has held any plan before is not.
About comparing driving lines: a phone's built-in GPS updates only about once per second, which is not accurate enough to compare lines. We recommend an external GPS receiver such as RaceBox or DigSpice IV.

The settings are shown on every plan. Opening up (private → groups → all drivers) needs Drivers Club or above, but narrowing it never does. You can go back to private after canceling.

About being listed on a leaderboard: sessions are private to start with. To appear on a track's leaderboard you need Drivers Club or above, session visibility set to “All drivers”, and a vehicle attached to the session. Leaderboards are split into cars and bikes, so a session driven without a vehicle is never listed, whatever the visibility. Add a vehicle once and it is picked automatically when you have not chosen one, so in practice that is all you need to do. If you cancel, the listing stops even though the visibility setting stays. Reading leaderboards works on every plan.

Managing your data

Careful: deleting your sessions and deleting your account cannot be undone. Export anything you want to keep as CSV first. Deleting your account leaves the settings on your phone, such as the wallpaper and the theme, as they are.
Deleting your account and paid plans: deleting your account does not cancel your subscription. Cancel it separately in the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). After you cancel, you can keep using the plan until the end of the period.
